Statement Regarding the Issuance of Veterans Checks
December 22, 1995
Washington, D.C. – The following is a statement of Senator John McCain regarding the issuance of checks to American veterans:
"I, like all Arizonans, am outraged that there would be any delay in the issuance of veterans disability checks due to the budget crisis. Such an injustice is abusive and totally unnecessary. First, the President vetoed the appropriations bill that would have fully funded VA operations. Second, the administration has the full authority to issue veterans checks by designating the necessary personnel as 'essential.'
"But, it appears that the administration has chosen to play politics with veterans. In response, yesterday, the House passed a stop gap measure to force the President to ensure that veterans' checks are sent out in a timely manner. The Senate Democrats stopped the bill from passing in the Senate last night. We will continue to push to get this bill to the President, so that those who sacrificed for our nation will not be victimized by political gamesmanship."
